Dental Crowns

A crown is recommended when a tooth is too damaged or weakened to be restored with a standard dental restoration. Common reasons include:

  • Extensive Decay – When decay is too large for a routine restoration, a crown reinforces the
tooth and protects it from further damage.
  • Cracked or Fractured Teeth – Crowns stabilize and protect teeth that have cracks or
    fractures.
  • After Root Canal Treatment – Teeth that have undergone root canal therapy can become
more brittle and benefit from the added strength of a crown.
  • Large or Failing Restorations – When an existing restoration is failing or the surrounding
tooth structure is compromised; a crown restores stability and function.
  • Cosmetic Improvement – Crowns can improve the appearance of teeth that are discolored,
    misshapen, or uneven.
  • Tooth Wear – Teeth worn down from grinding, clenching, or erosion may need crowns to
    restore proper bite and function

How long does it take to fit a dental crown?

Fitting a crown requires two visits to our office. Initially, we will remove decay, shape the tooth, and fit it with a temporary crown.

On the subsequent visit, we will remove the temporary crown and then fit and adjust the final crown. Finally, we will cement the crown into place, and you have a new beautiful looking tooth.

How Long Does a Dental Crown Last?

With proper care, dental crowns typically last 10–15 years, and often much longer. Their longevity depends on factors such as:

  • Daily oral hygiene practices
  • Bite forces and chewing habits
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings

Using a night guard (if recommended) and maintaining good brushing and flossing habits can help extend the life of a crown.

What are the capabilities of crowns?

Crowns and bridges are highly durable, custom-made restorations designed to fully cover and protect damaged or weakened teeth. The main purpose of crowns and dental bridges is to restore the tooth’s strength, shape, and function. They are crafted to match the color and contour of your natural teeth, so they blend seamlessly into your smile.

Many people have unexplained pain in back teeth with large fillings.  This is often due to hairline cracks in the chewing part of the tooth. Placing crowns on these teeth relieves the pain and allows a return of full dental function for these teeth. In front teeth, older fillings can both weaken the teeth and cause “appearance” problems due to staining or chipping. Porcelain crowns and bridges are suitable in cases where porcelain veneers are not. In teeth with root canal, crowns are recommended to prevent breakage.
